Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) - In this procedure, Dr. Matt draws blood from a horse.  The blood is then processed in a centrifuge to separate the blood components.  This process distills a portion of the blood to a platelet concentration which is five times richer than normal blood while removing the red and white blood cells.

PRP provides growth factors which enhance healthy cells to the tissue injury, forms new blood vessels, forms new connective tissue, and regenerates skin growth.

PRP can be use to treat:

  • Tendon injuries, new injuries as well as old injuries which are not healing properly
    • Usually one treatment is needed
  • Joint diseases (osteoarthritis and osteochondrosis)
    • Usually 3 treatments over 2-3 week intervals is needed

Stem Cell Therapy - In this procedure, Dr. Matt harvests about 2 teaspoons of fat from the horse.  That fat is sent to VetStem in California where it is processed and shipped back for Dr. Matt to inject into the injured area.  It has been used successfully to treat traumatic and degenerative diseases, including bowed tendons, ligament injuries, osteoarthritis, and osteochondral defects.  It is currently in the research phase for treatment use in cases of laminitis, Uveitis, and COPD (Heaves).

Vet Stem has reported the following success rates:

  • Suspensory Ligament Injuries: 76% returned to Full Work - Prior Level
  • Tendon Injuries: 77% returned to Full Work - Prior Level
  • Joint Disease: 57% returned to Full Work - Prior Level

Stem Cell Therapy is used to treat:

  • Reduce pain and inflammation
  • Restore performance
  • Regenerate tendon, ligament, and joint issues
